What causes aging skin?

As we age, we experience loss of elasticity, volume, decreased collagen and elastin. Even gravity plays a role in altering our facial appearance. We can’t stop the clock on aging skin, but we can slow the progression of fine lines, wrinkles and sagging skin. This isn’t about vanity, it’s about feeling good about how you look and continued self-confidence. Genetics and diet play a large role in how a person ages, and topical products can help with conditioning the skin and maintaining its cellular structure; however with time, deeper treatments are usually needed.

Skin ages and sags as we get older because the production of collagen & elastin, the proteins responsible for plumping and cushioning the skin in our bodies, slows down. The epidermis becomes thinner and the skin’s barrier becomes drier as a result. That coupled that with sun exposure and damaging free radicals (smog, dirt & pollution) and the negative effects of aging skin are intensified. Prevention, as early as possible, is key to delaying these effects.

The best anti-aging skin regime begins with daily topical application of sunscreen; it’s the best investment you can make and readily available almost everywhere. Ninety percent of cosmetic skin problems that occur with age, such as wrinkles, sagging and hyperpigmentation, are caused by sun exposure, according to the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology.

Treatments for aging skin and facial volume loss

Beyond topical products, we have many treatments and procedures here at Abbracci Med Spa to help correct damage from sun exposure and natural aging that occurs. We can use fillers to plump up the skin under the eyes and raise the cheekbones, and neurotoxins (like Botox) will relax the facial muscles in the upper face (forehead, between the eyebrows) thereby smoothing the fine lines that appear in those areas. We also offer facials and peels to help you turn back the clock on aging skin. Our medical staff will meet with you one-on-one to discuss your goals and desired results.
