Hello lovely. We’re so blessed to live in such a beautiful place. Southern California enjoys nearly 263 days of sunshine per year, and while the dry air and low humidity is great for our hair, it’s not so great for our skin. When there’s less moisture in the air, our skin can feel (and look) dry and tight, and lines can seem more visible. To keep your skin healthy year-round in our climate, here are some tips.
Stay hydrated: start your day with a green smoothie, which is full of water-containing fruits and vegetables. Continue to hydrate during the day by keeping a refillable water bottle with you at all times. Keeping your water intake up will also help you maintain skin moisture levels, replenishes skin tissue and increases elasticity, which in turn delays the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.
Sunscreen: Our favorite skincare topic and skin damage preventer! 263 days of sunshine a year means that, at the very least, you should be applying sunscreen at least 263 days of the year. But really, you should be applying sunscreen everyday, because even on cloudy & rainy days, up to 80% of the sun’s UV rays can penetrate your skin. These UV rays are responsible for prematurely aging skin, causing wrinkles, age spots & hyper-pigmentation, and they can also pass through window glass! So, even if you work indoors, are driving, or it’s raining, make sure to apply enough sunscreen to generously coat any skin that will not be covered by clothing. We recommend Epicuren Zinc Oxide Perfecting Sunscreen 27, an antioxidant-rich sunscreen that naturally protects your skin from UV-related damage, including premature aging and hyperpigmentation.
Add a Retinol product to your P.M. regime: Retinol stimulates collagen production, which fades spots, smoothes wrinkles, tightens pores, improves skin texture and calms breakouts. It also stimulates the blood vessels in the skin, which is what gives you that rosy glow when you use a retinol product. A great Retinol product to start with is SkinCeuticals Retinol 1.0 which contains 1% pure retinol.
Don’t forget your Eyes & Lips: Dab an eye cream, such as iS Clinical Youth Eye Complex to the under eye area. It contains antioxidants which reduce wrinkles, puffiness and dark circles, and is clinically proven to target & repair damaged skin. This product is also great to use on your lips, which will help with those vertical lines on the outer edge.
Exfoliate your Body: Many people believe they don’t have to exfoliate in the winter, thinking that it will dry their skin further. But remember, dry skin is a build up of dead skin, and unless it’s removed, lotions and creams can’t penetrate properly. Using a loofah in the shower, or dry brushing your skin a few times a week, will help remedy dry skin.
We hope these tips help keep your skin in tip top shape until warm sunny skies return! Do you have any winter skin care tips that work for you? Feel free to share them in the comments!
